BAVUG September Meeting – FCP X: Tool or Toy

September 13, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free – $5

BAVUG‘s September Meeting will be held here at Rule Boston Camera. Here are the event details from BAVUG:  The analogy has often been drawn that every edit system is just a tool in the editor’s toolbox, so at our September meeting, we will take an honest look and ask:

“Is Final Cut Pro X really a tool or toy?”

In the wake of the disappointing debut of FCPX (aka iMovie pro) Brian Cassin began experimenting with it to make sure that when he talked smack about it with other editors, he did so with intelligence. What surprised him most was that he ended up liking it! A lot. So much so that he’s cut many tv shows, docs, and a short film on it.

It’s got more in common with Avid then you’d think.

The discussion will encompass:

  • The similarities and differences between Avid/ FCPX.
  • The paradigm shifts that had everyone upset, i.e., How do you organize media: There aren’t bins, but keywords… Think: twitter hashtags!
  • The edit: magnetic timeline, no tracks.
  • The ecosystem: the way graphics work, “script sync” for FCPX and other handy utilities that allow an editor to have a preorganized project and rough assemblies within 15 minutes and a few clicks of the mouse.

Brian Cassin is a 20 year+ veteran of post-production. With spots cut for Showtime, television documentaries for NOVA, Discovery, Food Network, and Animal Planet. Currently moving from editing into directing, Brian has an affinity for long and short form docs, remote collaboration, and lupins.
