CASH REBATES Available for the Panasonic Varicam LT!

The only thing more exciting than the recent Patriots Super Bowl victory, is the announcement of CASH REBATES for the Panasonic Varicam LT 4K Cinema Camera! Between now and March 31, 2017, Panasonic is offering two rebates on the VariCam LT 4K cinema camcorder — a $4,500 cash rebate on a camera package purchase or a $2,500 cash rebate on a body-only purchase. Powered by the same Super 35mm 4K native imager as the full-size VariCam 35, the VariCam LT cinema camcorder offers a lighter, smaller form factor. Ideal for handheld shooting, it’s also a cinch to mount on gimbals, cranes, and drones.

Only the VariCam boasts dual native ISOs, letting you shoot ISO 5000 to capture Magic Hour or candlelight scenes; all without any loss of dynamic range, resolution, or color. Nick’s Holiday Picks – The GoPro HERO 5

Each week through mid-December, I’ll pick a gift option for the technically-inclined on your holiday gift lists.

This week, my first pick is the GoPro HERO 5, available in our Production Outfitters expendables store.  The HERO 5 is the next exciting step for GoPro’s product line, and it comes with some great upgrades from the HERO 4 Black.

img_6321

First and foremost, it’s waterproof without a housing (up to 33ft). With some new Video Stabilization and some RAW Photo capability the Hero 5 is starting to add some additional support to their already feature packed product line. GoPro is still the name of the game when it comes to action sports cameras and the HERO 5 continues that tradition.

Take a look on our giant “holiday candle” for next week’s pick.

Canon Introduces New Firmware Upgrade for C300 + C300 MKII

Canon has announced a new firmware upgrade at NAB New York that is sure to please C300 shooters.  The main features for the Mark II are enabled audio recording in 2K crop mode and the ability to turn off the internal microphone.  The update brings an expanded Zebra range (5% to 100%) on the Mark II and shutter angle priority (keep your desired shutter angle as you change frame rates) on both the original C300 and the Mark II.

screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-11-38-52-am

The other updates coming with the firmware relate to Canon’s Cine Servo Zoom lenses in EF mount.  Auto and push iris are now available for Cine Servo EF 17-120mm and EF 50-1000mm, as well as the new 18-80mm that will be released shortly.  Dual Pixel autofocus will also be supported for the EF 17-120mm and 18-80mm on the Mark II and original cameras with dual pixel capability.  We currently do not carry these lenses (we have the 17-120mm available in PL mount only), but we will have an 18-80mm once it is released later this month.

Check out this video with Canon Technical Advisor, Brent Ramsey, for more information about the upgrade.  We’ll be updating the C300 Mark II EF Mount and PL Mount cameras in our rental inventory when the firmware is released on December 13th. Interested in buying the C300 Mark II? See links below and contact us at sales@rule.com or 800-rule-com.

Camera in Action with Zach Zamboni at Maine Media Workshops + College

Maine Media Workshops + College offers a variety of courses in photography, filmmaking, multimedia, and more. Join them for the CAMERA IN ACTION Workshop with DP, Zach Zamboni in September where attendees will have an opportunity to “develop cinematic techniques to capture fluid motion and dynamic scene coverage” over 7 days in scenic Maine.

FROM MAINE MEDIA WORKSHOPS:
This course covers the creative use of the camera in dramatic film and television production, and includes the artistic and technical responsibilities of the Director of Photography.

The course explores shot design, camera technique, point-of-view, aspect ratio, lens selection, and scene coverage for multi-camera shoots. Students will also gain insight to the working relationship between the Director of Photography and the crew.

Through lectures and hands-on production of reality-based, documentary and narrative scenarios; students come to understand the requirements for shooting in the field. Learn to prepare for shoots to provide the best camera coverage to ensure that the final edit is smooth. Every shoot is multi-camera in this intense workshop.

Students work side by side using identical set ups, including Sony F55s, custom handheld rigs, Canon compact zooms and industry sponsored cine primes, on a different location almost every day. Students are expected to shoot on their toes and protect each others’ back as a series of unknown elements are designed to surprise them while in action. This workshop tests students on their technical and creative skills as filmmakers. Students review their dailies to study growth during this highly active workshop.

Different Faces Different Voices Film Festival

The Different Faces Different Voices film festival launched for the first time in 2016. It was created by the non-profit Harvard Square Script Writers, one of the oldest professional screenwriting organizations in the country in collaboration with Women in Film and Video/New England, the 3rd oldest chapter of Women in Film and Television in the world. The festival is aimed at encouraging filmmakers to explore often untold stories of the human experience.

In the first year of the film festival, the focus was on Flicks4Chicks with filmmakers of both genders challenged to write and produce a 10-minute film with strong female protagonists.

Similar to the 48 Hour Film Competition, filmmaking crews from all over the world could sign up to participate via FilmFreeway, culminating with screenings and an awards ceremony at The Brattle Theatre this month on June 29th and 30th.

Rule Boston Camera is proud to support our local filmmaking community and Flicks4Chicks as one of the sponsors of this new film festival. Learn more on the Flicks4Chicks website.
