Highlights from 2018 Cine Gear Expo Atlanta

RBC’s Brian Malcolm and Dylan Law journeyed to Pinewood Atlanta Studios for the first Cine Gear Expo in Atlanta.  For gearheads like us who have checked-in at Cine Gear’s annual expo on the West Coast, this was a bit closer to home.

What do we love about both Cine Gear Expo events? You get access to a lot of manufacturers along with inside knowledge behind the latest camera and lighting equipment and accessories for film, video, and digital media makers. You also have lots of conversations with the makers — DP’s and AC’s who are or will be using the gear.  This combination, along with hands-on access and demos, goes a long way in determining what makes sense for our rental customers, and, eventually, what we will add to our rental inventory.

Below is a quick look at the gear and technology that made an impression. Click here to follow Rule Boston Camera on Instagram and check out Dylan’s Instagram takeover for #2018CineGearExpoATL.

Highlights from 2018 Cine Gear Expo Atlanta:

• The continuing synergism between the two VITEC companies, SmallHD and Teradek, who are hard at work developing new wireless monitor products.

• The VITEC group via Teradek is also integrating RT Motion wireless focus into the line-up with a promising new wireless focus system.

Lindsey Optics has an awesome line of tray mounted close up filters which will become a “must have” for any rental house.

• LED tubes continue to crowd out all other lighting at trade shows. Quasar continues to dominate the offerings with price and quality, while the new Freestyle tubes from Kino Flo introduce a ballast-based RGB alternative. And, finally, Digital Sputnik seems about to release their very versatile RGB tube.

LiteGear is stepping up to the RGB world with their versatile new LiteMat Spectrum series.

Canon had their new mirrorless R camera, featuring a new line up of high quality RF lenses. It’s very likely that the RF mount will show up on future pro digital cinema cameras.

• Shout out to our pals at PC&E Atlanta for a tour of their rental facility and their awesome party.

Now Renting! The Avenger D650 Junior Boom Arm

Who doesn’t like constructing that perfectly-executed, overhead shot of a beautiful plate of food?

I’m a sucker for one — that’s for sure! It seems like this type of shot is becoming a “go-to” look for many new shows especially when highlighting all sorts of products.

Camera mounting aside (that’s an entirely different issue), lighting this type of setup can be tricky. C-Stands, Speed Rail, Clamps, and Mounting Hardware can be clumsy and take up valuable space on set. However, with the Avenger Junior Boom Arm in our rental inventory, things just got a little easier. From Quasars to SkyPanels, the Junior Boom Arm can handle it all. Just mount the light and extend the arm to your desired setup.

I’m looking forward to seeing what our clients come up with and how they’ll end up using the Boom Arm on set.

-Dylan Law, MoVI Tech and QC/Logistics

Quality Control

Every day, the engineers and Quality Control technicians here at RBC, check, reset, clean, test, calibrate and otherwise ensure that our equipment is ready for the next shoot.

Engineer, Jeff Dickerson, recently checked in the ARRI 60mm Macro Lens PL mount. Both front and rear elements got a detailed inspection and cleaning for dust, scuffs and scratches that get logged (if found) for future reference. He also tested the iris and focus rings to make sure they were turning smoothly and that the iris blades open and close correctly. The body of the lens was checked for scratches and dents in the metal that could cause issues, and to wrap it up, he checked to be sure that all of the screws on the lens and PL mount are accounted for and as tight as they need to be before putting the lens back in rotation.

With the 60mm macro lens, a rear element scratch is alway a scary thing. The rear element is responsible for focusing the entire image onto the film plane (or sensor in the 21st century), so a scratch to this piece of glass will almost certainly show up in an image if damaged. Fortunately for this one, the scratch is on the perimeter of the glass, outside of the sensor’s view which does not affect image quality and flaring.
